The term culture would mean the entire gamut of activities, beliefs, lifestyle, habits, rituals, arts, ethics and behavioral patterns of a society. Yet despite the wide definition of culture, the elements of culture being too varied and divergent, it is not easy to provide a relationship between culture and psychology.

Intra-cultural psychology seeks to understand the cultural basis of behavior by studying the peculiarities of a society, its rules and norms and shows how traditions shape or influence the collective psyche of the people within the society. Cross-cultural psychology focuses on finding universal patterns of behavior or beliefs that are common among people of all cultures and this is what has been described here as ‘inter-cultural’ psychology.

The terms ‘intra-cultural’ and ‘inter-cultural’ psychology would be more conducive to finding a psychology that shows convergent patterns of cultural behavior among people across societies.

In different parts of the globe there are different languages. There is a close and intimate connection between culture and language. It does not only mirror each other, but also enrich and develop each other. Culture began when speech started. There are experts who say that you cannot fully understand the culture without understanding or having direct access to the language.

It is a characteristic of culture to be socially transmitted through language. Culture is transmitted to one generation to another through language, whether it is verbal or non-verbal, through gestures and signs, orally or in writing.

Another thing to ponder on is that in a national culture, there are also subcultures. Subcultures are smaller groups that also have norms, values, beliefs and special languages which make them distinct or different form the national culture and broader society. Understanding the subculture’s language would help us understand the organization structure.

Some people think that the 1960s was a time where the youth of America rebelled. These people believe this was a time of disobedient humans who hugged trees and spun around to loud music. These people may be partially right about this 1960s culture, but they are missing the big part of the picture that founded this movement called The Counter Culture.

Counterculture means, “A Culture, especially of young people, with values or lifestyles in opposition to those of the established culture.” The Counter Culture was a time when young America became fed up with our country’s government and demanded the truth. They rebelled towards acceptance of individuality and freedom.

The Counter Culture opposed the Vietnam war and refused the Draft if it came their way. This wasn’t just to disagree with the establishment, but to live by what they preached… PEACE.
